For example, in the serial number 7410A18709B001, 7410A is the product and plant prefix, 18 means 2018, 7 means July, 09 means day 9, and B001 identifies the unit. Therefore, the manufacture date is July 9, 2018.
These layouts apply to supported North American Navien tankless water heaters and boilers from 2008 onward. The serial number provides the date when it matches one of them. Enter the model number too so Appliage can check the product type.
Find the Age of Your Navien Water Heater with Appliage
Find the Product Label on the Navien Cabinet
The label may be on the cabinet side or inside the removable front cover. Photograph the full label before copying the number. The product name and model tell you whether the unit is a condensing tankless water heater or an NCB combination boiler, while the serial supplies its date.
Turn off power before removing a front cover. The label does not require disconnecting gas, water, venting, or sealed components.
Enter the Complete Serial Number
For a fourteen character serial, characters 6–7 give the year, character 8 gives the month, and characters 9–10 give the day. The separate Product Date layout has a prefix of four or five characters, eight date digits in YYYYMMDD order, and four unit digits. You can enter the hyphens if the label has them. Appliage gives a date only when the full serial matches a supported layout and the calendar date is valid.
Navien Age Rules
- Positions 1–5Product and plant prefix
7410A records production details - Positions 6–7Two digit year
18 means 2018 - Position 8Month code
7 means July - Positions 9–10Calendar day
09 means day 9 - Positions 11–14Unit identifier
B001 identifies the unit
Navien Uses X for October
Month codes 1 through 9 represent January through September. X represents October. The official records do not assign a letter to November or December in this fourteen character format, so another letter cannot be converted into one of those months.
| Month code | Month | Month code | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | January | 6 | June |
| 2 | February | 7 | July |
| 3 | March | 8 | August |
| 4 | April | 9 | September |
| 5 | May | X | October |
Characters 9–10 must give a real day in the coded month. For example, month code 2 means February, so day code 30 is invalid. Appliage returns no age for that serial number.
A Separate Serial with Product Date in the Middle
Navien’s NR/NP service manual shows 9262-20081208-1027 and labels its three parts Model No., Product Date, and Unit Number on Product Date. The middle digits mean December 8, 2008. This is not the fourteen character YYMDD layout above: it has a four character prefix and the full eight digit date in year, month and day order.
Appliage also recognizes the five character prefix 09889. Two Delaware equipment records carry that prefix and the same shape: eight date digits, then four unit digits, including serial 09889202401191063. The embedded date is January 19, 2024. Those registrations corroborate the serial layout; the registry filing date is not itself a manufacture date. The Product Date route is limited to these checked prefixes, 9262 and 09889.
Navien Serial Number Example 3: 9262-20081208-1027
Navien’s manual prints the serial number 9262-20081208-1027 with the middle eight digits labeled Product Date. They mean December 8, 2008. Appliage returns December 8, 2008 (Estimated).
Navien Serial Number Example 4: 09889202401191063
The serial number 09889202401191063 has prefix 09889, date digits 20240119, and unit digits 1063. Appliage takes the middle field as January 19, 2024 (Estimated). The Delaware records help check the format; their registration dates do not independently date this unit.
The Same July Date Ten Years Apart
Navien Serial Number Example 1: 7410A18709B001
For example, the serial number 7410A18709B001 has five parts: 7410A | 18 | 7 | 09 | B001. The year field means 2018, the month code 7 means July, and 09 means day 9. Therefore, the manufacture date is July 9, 2018.

Navien Serial Number Example 2: 7410A08709B001
For example, in the serial number 7410A08709B001, the year field is 08, the month code 7 means July, and 09 means day 9. The two digit year belongs to the 2000s because this Navien product line begins in 2008. Therefore, the manufacture date is July 9, 2008.
Why the Navien Rule Starts in 2008
Navien America was established in 2006. A CPSC notice says the first recalled Navien tankless group was manufactured in 2008 and sold beginning in February of that year. Appliage therefore starts this serial rule in 2008. The date of an individual water heater still comes from characters 6–10 of its serial number.
Navien’s Korean parent company began exporting gas boilers to the United States in 2002 under the KD name. KD was an older boiler brand used before Navien America was established. These boilers use a different label system, so the fourteen character Navien rule does not apply to them.
Why a Date inside an Old Serial Is Not Enough
For example, 8881-20100520-3026 contains eight digits that look like a date. Hyphens are not the problem: the supported Product Date example also has hyphens. The issue is that the prefix 8881 has not been verified against a Navien label or the checked records. Appliage therefore returns no manufacture date for this serial.
Enter the entire serial number. Digits that look like a date are not enough to identify which Navien layout the unit uses.
