Amana Serial Number Lookup: Older and Newer Date Codes

Amana household appliances and Amana HVAC equipment use different serial number structures. A kitchen or laundry appliance that uses the Whirlpool style format has a manufacturing site letter in position 1, a one character year code in position 2, a two digit production week in positions 3–4, and a five digit unit sequence in positions 5–9.

Age finderAmana (appliances)Change brand

Amana household appliances use this Whirlpool serial system. Amana HVAC equipment from Goodman/Daikin does not use this appliance serial rule.

For example, split serial number M42510000 as M | 4 | 25 | 10000. M identifies the manufacturing site, 4 can mean 2024, 2014, or an earlier year ending in 4, 25 means production week 25, and 10000 identifies the individual appliance. The site letter and unit sequence do not influence the manufacture date. The year digit repeats after ten years, so Appliage shows every date that is still possible. Amana serials from 1987 through 1994 use an older ten digit format instead, with the date up front.

Example Amana dryer rating plate with serial number M42510000 explained.
Example plate redrawn for this guide. Serial number M42510000 gives Week 25 of 2024, 2014 or 1984.

An Amana HVAC serial number that uses the Goodman YYMM format has the year in positions 1–2 and the month in positions 3–4. The remaining characters identify production and unit details. For example, split serial number 1306ABCDEFG as 13 | 06 | ABCDEFG. It means June 2013. Choose the product type before decoding the serial number. For a household appliance, a model number that Appliage recognizes can verify that the model belongs to Amana and the selected appliance category, and dated records for the model, when they exist, can narrow the repeating year code. For HVAC equipment, the serial number alone provides the date.

Appliage decodes four Amana household appliance year rules. Serial numbers from 2010 to today use the nine character layout with a numeric year code. Serial numbers from 2001 through 2013 can instead carry the Maytag format, eight digits with a year letter and a month letter at the end.

Serial numbers from 1991 through 2009 use the nine character layout with a letter year code in position 2, and serial numbers from 1987 through 1994 use a ten digit format with the year and month up front. Amana heating and cooling equipment is separate and follows the Goodman positions covered further down.

For an Amana appliance, X can point to 1990 or 2020. The model number may show which date belongs to your machine.

Go by the serial number’s shape rather than the year. A ten digit serial made only of numbers uses the 1987 through 1994 format. A ten character serial that ends in two letters uses the Maytag format. A nine character serial opens with the plant letter, and position 2 tells the rest apart: a digit is the repeating numeric code, and a letter comes from a letter table.

Amana Age Rules

Amana Kitchen and Laundry Appliance Structure

  1. 1 manufacturing site letter
  2. 2 year character
  3. 3–4 production week
  4. 5–9 unit sequence

Position 1 is the manufacturing site code. Whirlpool assigns this letter to the plant that built the appliance. It identifies where the appliance was made, not when it was made. Position 2 gives the final digit of the year, positions 3–4 give the production week, and the last five digits identify the individual appliance.

Amana Appliance Year Codes in Position 2

Year code Year meaning
0 year ending in 0
1 year ending in 1
2 year ending in 2
3 year ending in 3
4 year ending in 4
5 year ending in 5
6 year ending in 6
7 year ending in 7
8 year ending in 8
9 year ending in 9

The year digit repeats every ten years. Appliage excludes dates that are still in the future. If more than one past or current year remains, it shows all of them rather than assuming that the newest year is correct, and it notes when a year is older than most machines still in use.

Amana Appliance Production Week Codes in Positions 3–4

Week code Meaning
01–53 Production weeks 1 through 53; the leading zero is part of codes 01 through 09

This structure gives a production week rather than a month. A calendar week can cross a month boundary, so Appliage does not convert the result into one exact month.

Amana Appliance Letter Year Codes (1991–2009)

On earlier Amana serial numbers, position 2 holds a letter instead of a digit. The other positions do not change: position 1 is still the manufacturing site, positions 3–4 are still the production week, and positions 5–9 are still the unit sequence. The published letter years run from A for 1991 through Y for 2009 and skip I, N, O, Q, V, and X.

B 1992

M 2002
P 2003
R 2004
S 2005
T 2006
U 2007
W 2008
Y 2009

Most letters in the older table name one year. At F, C, and M, E or F still has an undocumented newer meaning, so Appliage treats 1995 or 1996 as a candidate rather than a settled date. It does not assign 2025 or 2026 without a manufacturer document. In MG2508163, M is the Marion manufacturing site, G is 1997, and 25 is the production week. So MG2508163 is week 25 of 1997.

Amana Maytag Serial Numbers with Two Ending Letters (2001–2013)

Some Amana appliances made after Amana joined Maytag in 2001 carry Maytag’s ending letter serials: eight digits followed by two letters, like 12772864EL. The first letter is the year and the second letter is the month. In 12772864EL, E means 2004 and L means June, so the unit is from June 2004.

Example Amana microwave rating plate with serial number 12772864EL explained.
Example plate redrawn for this guide. Serial number 12772864EL gives June 2004.

The letter tables sit in a Maytag service job aid whose brand table lists Amana, and the Maytag serial number lookup shows the full year and month tables. Tail years before 2001 are not applied to Amana: the year table itself starts in 1994, but Amana only joined Maytag in 2001 and used its own letter serial system until then.

So a tail year from 1994 through 2000 comes back with no Amana date. For example, serial number 12438097QQ has year letter Q for 1996, and Appliage recognizes the layout but returns no date for it.

Amana Ten Digit Serial Numbers from 1987 through 1994

Amana serials from 1987 through 1994 are ten digits with the date up front, where the first two digits are the year and the next two are the month, so 8707 means July 1987. Two federal recall notices tie serial ranges in this span to their build dates: one covers units from 1987 through 1991, and the other covers April 1993 through September 1994.

Amana HVAC Dates from 1987 through 1994, and the 1995 Gap

The YYMM structure above covers Amana HVAC dates from 1996 onward. A 2004 federal recall pairs serials starting 96, built by Goodman, with units made in January 1996, which sets that floor.

Older ten digit Amana HVAC serials from 1987 through 1994 also decode. They use the same format as the Amana household appliances of that era, with the year in the first two digits and the month in the next two, so 9108033656 means August 1991. Two federal recall notices tie serial ranges in this span to their build dates, and one of them covers room air conditioners.

Example Amana room air conditioner rating plate with serial number 9108033656 explained.
Example plate redrawn for this guide. Serial number 9108033656 gives August 1991.

Serials from 1995 sit in a gap between the two anchored spans, so they come back with no date rather than a guess.

Amana Appliance Serial Number Example: 8707011078

The result is July 1987.

  1. Split serial number 8707011078 as 87 | 07 | 011078.
  2. The first pair, 87, means 1987, and the second pair, 07, means July.
  3. A federal recall notice lists this serial inside a range distributed from June 1987 onward, which supports that date.

Therefore, the manufacture date is July 1987.

Amana Serial Numbers Appliage Cannot Find the Age

A household appliance serial number must match the nine character structure of site, year, week and sequence, with a week from 01 through 53, the ten digit 1987–1994 format with the year and month up front, or the Maytag format with two ending letters. An HVAC serial number must begin with four digits and have a month from 01 through 12, with a year from 1996 onward or inside the 1987 through 1994 span. If the serial number matches none of these structures, Appliage returns no manufacture date.

If position 2 of a household appliance serial number holds I, N, O, Q, or V, Appliage returns no year, because no official document has dated those letters. X gives two years, 1990 and 2020.

For a repeating household year digit, entering the model number can verify Amana identity and product category, and dated records for the model, when they exist, can narrow the cycle. A dated installation, purchase, service, recall, or factory record can also resolve it.

If a serial number appears to match more than one product category, select the category printed on the rating plate before accepting the result.

Why Amana Has Two Serial Systems

Amana kitchen and laundry appliances are part of Whirlpool’s appliance group and use the Whirlpool style structure of site, year and week. Amana heating and cooling equipment is built within the Goodman and Daikin HVAC business and uses the Goodman YYMM structure.

The Whirlpool serial number lookup explains the household appliance structure in more detail. The Goodman serial number lookup explains the HVAC date positions.
