Carrier Serial Number Lookup: Find the Year and Week

Modern Carrier HVAC serial numbers use four main parts: two digits for the production week, two digits for the year, a plant letter, and a unit sequence. For example, split serial number 1214P12345 as 12 | 14 | P | 12345. The first pair means production week 12, and the second means 2014. P identifies the plant that made the equipment, while 12345 identifies the individual unit. The plant letter and unit sequence do not influence the manufacture date.

Appliage uses this WWYY structure for dates from 1985 onward. The Carrier serial number alone is enough to return the production week and an estimated age, so the model number is optional.

Carrier Serial Number Lookup

Example Carrier gas furnace rating plate with serial number 1214P12345 split into production week, year, plant and unit sequence.
Example plate redrawn for this guide. Serial number 1214P12345 gives week 12 of 2014.
  1. 1–2 production week
  2. 3–4 year
  3. 5 plant marker
  4. remainder unit sequence

Positions 1–2 are the production week and must be from 01 through 53. Positions 3–4 are the last two digits of the year. Appliage uses this structure only for dates from 1985 through the present, so 14 means 2014. Position 5 is the plant letter assigned to the factory that made the equipment. The remaining digits are the unit sequence. The plant letter tells Carrier where the equipment was made, while the sequence identifies the individual unit. Neither field influences its manufacture date.

Carrier Serial Numbers Appliage Cannot Find the Age

A serial number that begins with a letter, contains a week above 53, or is too short does not match this Carrier layout. Appliage returns no date instead of applying the numeric rule to an older format.

The 1985 start is where the evidence stops, not necessarily when the format began. Real rating plates verify this numeric style back to 1985, including a field plate from week 28 of 1985. Nothing from 1980 through 1984 has passed verification, so a serial that lands in those years gets no date.

The decoded week is the manufacture date, not the installation date or the date the warranty started. A unit made in 2014 may have been installed and registered later.

Bryant, Payne, and Day & Night

Bryant and Payne use the same serial number structure. Select the brand printed on the rating plate so the result shows the correct equipment name.

Day & Night now belongs to the International Comfort Products family, whose serial numbers begin with a plant letter before the year and week. If the rating plate says Day & Night, select Day & Night in Appliage.
