This rule begins in October 2000 because that is when Whirlpool water heaters first went on sale at Lowe’s. American Water Heater Company made the tanks under a Whirlpool license and used its YYWW serial format. A code that points to a date before October 2000 doesn’t belong to a Whirlpool branded water heater.
Here we only talk about Whirlpool’s water heaters. A Whirlpool refrigerator, range, dishwasher, washer, or dryer uses the Whirlpool household appliance rule.
Find the Age of Your Whirlpool Water Heater with Appliage
Confirm That Whirlpool Is Printed on the Tank Label
The data label is attached to the tank jacket. On a gas unit, check near the main warning label or gas control. On an electric unit, look beside an element access panel. The label must identify the product as a Whirlpool water heater; a Whirlpool appliance model from a kitchen or laundry room follows a different serial system.
You can read the label from outside the water heater. Do not remove the gas control, burner cover, or an electrical panel.
A replacement component can have its own number and manufacture date. That number dates the component, not the water heater. Photograph the full tank label if you need to keep the brand, model, and serial together.
Enter the Serial with Its Opening Zero
Type the full Whirlpool water heater serial number into Appliage. The opening zero in 0903 is necessary: it makes the first pair 09 and the second pair 03. A valid code from October 2000 onward produces one production week and an estimated age. Enter the model number too when it is available because it helps distinguish a Whirlpool water heater from a Whirlpool kitchen or laundry appliance.
Whirlpool Water Heater Age Rules
- Digits 1–2Production year
09 means 2009 - Digits 3–4Production week
03 means week 3 - Character 5 onwardTank identifier
T408661 identifies the unit
Whirlpool uses week codes 01 through 53. The code identifies the production week, not the exact day the tank was made. If the week field is 00 or 54–99, Appliage returns no age.
Why the Rule Starts in October 2000
American Water Heater Company used the YYWW format before it began making Whirlpool water heaters. The Whirlpool line first went on sale in October 2000. Therefore, only serial dates from October 2000 onward belong to the Whirlpool line. For an earlier date, check the brand printed on the tank.
| Date from the first four digits | Whirlpool result | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| October–December 2000 | One production week | The Whirlpool line went on sale in October 2000 |
| 2001 onward | One production week | Whirlpool continued to use the YYWW format |
| Before October 2000 | No age | Whirlpool water heaters were not yet on sale |
Whirlpool Launch Period Example: 0040123456
For example, the serial number 0040123456 starts with 00 | 40. The year field means 2000, and the week field means production week 40, which falls at the beginning of October. This date is within the first month of Whirlpool water heater sales. Therefore, the manufacture date is production week 40 of 2000.
Why 9950123040 Is Not a Whirlpool Water Heater Date
For example, the serial number 9950123040 begins with 99 | 50, which normally means production week 50 of 1999. American Water Heater Company already used this serial format for its own tanks, but the Whirlpool water heater line did not launch until October 2000. Therefore, Appliage returns no age for this number under Whirlpool.
If American Water Heaters is printed on the tank instead, that same number can produce a valid 1999 date. Use the American Water Heaters guide for that label. The brand name on the tank decides which guide to use.
Why Whirlpool and American Water Heater Serials Match
Whirlpool was the brand sold to customers, while American Water Heater Company manufactured the tanks under license. The manufacturer kept the YYWW format already used on American branded tanks. That is why both brands can have the same serial structure.
The date boundaries remain different because Whirlpool water heaters were not sold until October 2000. Select Whirlpool Water Heater when Whirlpool appears on the tank. If the label says American Water Heaters, use the American Water Heaters guide.
