For example, split serial number M1B9810123 as M1B | 98 | 10 | 123. M1B identifies the product or factory series, while 123 identifies the individual unit. The middle four digits contain the date: 98 means 1998, and 10 means October. Therefore, the manufacture date is October 1998.
This Nordyne format applies to manufacture dates from 1989 onward. Because the serial number contains both the year and month fields, Appliage can return the manufacture month and an estimated age without the model number.
Nordyne Serial Number Explanation

The diagram uses serial number GBB030708229. GBB in positions 1–3 is the product prefix, and 08229 from position 8 onward is the unit sequence. These two fields identify the product or factory series and the individual unit. The date appears between them: 03 in positions 4–5 means 2003, and 07 in positions 6–7 means July. Therefore, the manufacture date is July 2003.
- 1–3 product prefix
- 4–5 two-digit year
- 6–7 numeric month
- 8 onward unit sequence
Year Code in Positions 4–5
Positions 4–5 are the final two digits of the manufacture year. Use the two supported ranges below. For example, 98 means 1998, while 03 means 2003.
| Digits in positions 4–5 | Manufacture year | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 89–99 | 1989–1999 | 98 means 1998 |
| 00–26 | 2000–2026 | 03 means 2003 |
Appliage accepts only manufacture years from 1989 through 2026. Digits 27–88 would point either to a year before 1989 or to a year after 2026, so Appliage returns no date.
Month Code in Positions 6–7
| Digits in positions 6–7 | Month |
|---|---|
| 01 | January |
| 02 | February |
| 03 | March |
| 04 | April |
| 05 | May |
| 06 | June |
| 07 | July |
| 08 | August |
| 09 | September |
| 10 | October |
| 11 | November |
| 12 | December |
Digits 6–7 must match a month from 01 through 12. If the value is outside that range, the serial number does not match this Nordyne date format.
Hyphens do not change the date. GBB-0307-08229 and GBB030708229 both split as GBB | 03 | 07 | 08229 after the hyphens are removed. Therefore, both serial numbers indicate July 2003.
Nordyne Serial Number Example: GBB030708229
Enter serial number GBB030708229. A model number is not needed. Appliage returns July 2003 (Estimated).
- Split the serial number as GBB | 03 | 07 | 08229.
- GBB is the product prefix that identifies the product or factory series. The final 08229 is the unit sequence that identifies the individual unit. Neither field changes the date.
- 03 is the year code and means 2003. The following 07 is the month code and means July.
- Therefore, the manufacture date is July 2003.
When the month is greater than 12
If the month field contains 99, the serial number does not use the Nordyne YYMM format because 99 is not a valid month. Some equipment sold under a Nordyne-related name was made by Rheem and must be decoded with the system for the manufacturer printed on the rating plate.
For example, split serial number ABC139912345 as ABC | 13 | 99 | 12345. ABC would be the product prefix, 13 would be the year, 99 would have to be the month, and 12345 would be the unit sequence. Because 99 is not a valid month, the serial number does not follow the Nordyne YYMM format, so Appliage cannot calculate a manufacture date with this rule. It does not mean December 2013 or September 2013. Check the manufacturer and model on the rating plate, then use the date method for that manufacturer.
Equipment made before 1989 also falls outside this layout. Older Miller and Intertherm products used earlier numbering systems, so do not apply the modern YYMM rule to those units.
A replaced blower motor or compressor can carry its own date label. Use the serial on the main equipment rating plate for the home’s furnace, air handler, or outdoor unit.
Intertherm, Miller, Maytag HVAC, and Frigidaire HVAC
Intertherm and Miller heating and cooling equipment use the same Nortek/Nordyne date positions. Both names are common on manufactured-home furnaces and package units.
Maytag HVAC and Frigidaire HVAC also appear under the Nortek system. Select HVAC when either name is printed on heating or cooling equipment. Maytag household appliances use Whirlpool’s serial system, while Frigidaire household appliances use the Electrolux system.
Always match the guide to the product type. Frigidaire refrigerators and Frigidaire HVAC units use different date positions, as do Maytag laundry appliances and Maytag HVAC equipment.
