Maytag Serial Number Lookup: Old and New Date Codes

Maytag appliances use two main serial number structures. In the ten-character Maytag format, positions 1–8 form the unit sequence, position 9 is the year letter, and position 10 is the month letter. In the later nine-character Whirlpool-style format, position 1 identifies the manufacturing site, position 2 is the year code, positions 3–4 give the production week, and positions 5–9 form the unit sequence. Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006, and Maytag did not change every product line to the later format at the same time.

For example, split serial number F42510000 as F | 4 | 25 | 10000. F identifies the manufacturing site, 4 is the year code, and 25 is the production week. The year code can repeat after ten years, so we advise you to enter the model number as well. For model MDB8969SDE0, the model information identifies 4 as 2014. Therefore, this appliance was made in production week 25 of 2014. If the model information does not identify one year, Appliage shows every possible date.

Appliage decodes three Maytag year rules. Serial numbers from 2010 to today use the nine character Whirlpool-style layout with a numeric year code. Serial numbers from 1990 through 2013 use the Maytag format, with a year letter and a month letter at the end. Serial numbers from 1991 through 2009 use the Whirlpool-style layout with a letter year code in position 2. Each rule has its own table under Maytag Age Rules below.

Maytag explains its serial year codes from 1994 onward. For older machines, B means 1990, D means 1991, F means 1992, and H means 1993. Appliage shows those four dates as estimates. The month letters changed in 2002, so use the list for the year on the serial.

The three spans overlap. A ten character serial that ends in two letters uses the Maytag format. A nine character serial carries its date near the front, and position 2 tells the rest apart: a digit is the repeating numeric code, and a letter comes from a letter table.

Maytag Age Rules

The ten-character Maytag format contains eight unit-identifying digits followed by two date letters. Position 9 gives the manufacture year, and position 10 gives the month. The first eight digits identify the individual machine but do not influence its manufacture date. The year and month tables skip letters, so use the tables below instead of counting through the alphabet.

The year-letter table runs from K for 1994 through X for 2013. The month alphabet changed in 2002, so serial numbers from 1994 through 2001 use the earlier month table and serial numbers from 2002 through 2013 use the later one.

Use these two tables only when the model and ten-character serial structure match this Maytag format. If the year letter is not in the table, Appliage cannot assign a manufacture year. If the final letter is not a valid month code for that year, Appliage recognizes the product but returns no manufacture date.

Whirlpool-Style Serial Numbers: Site, Year, Week, and Unit Sequence

Later nine-character Maytag serial numbers place the date near the front. Position 1 is the manufacturing-site code assigned to the factory that built the appliance. Position 2 is the year code, and positions 3–4 give the production week. The final five digits identify the individual machine but do not influence its manufacture date.

The meaning of the year character depends on the Maytag product family. For the product families used by Appliage, 8 indicates 2018 and 9 indicates 2019 on the covered 27-inch front-load laundry models. Other covered families include the dishwasher, B955 steam-dryer, and Bravos-washer groups.

This layout identifies a production week, not a specific day or month. A single numeric year code can repeat after ten years. For example, 4 may indicate 2014 or 2024 until dated records for the model rule out one of those years.

Bravos, Neptune, and Centennial are Maytag product lines, so use the Maytag tables for those appliances. Then match the serial number’s layout to the correct table.

Whirlpool-Style Letter Year Codes (1991–2009)

On earlier serial numbers in this layout, position 2 holds a letter instead of a digit. The other positions do not change: position 1 is still the manufacturing site, positions 3–4 are still the production week, and positions 5–9 are still the unit sequence. The published letter years run from A for 1991 through Y for 2009 and skip I, N, O, Q, V, and X.

Most letters in the older table name one year, but that is not true for every plant and year code. At F, C, and M, E or F gives 1995 or 1996 in the older table while the newer E/F meaning is undocumented. Appliage leaves the older date as a candidate and does not guess 2025 or 2026. In ML2536812, M is the Marion manufacturing site, L is 2001, and 25 is the production week. So ML2536812 is week 25 of 2001. Example 2 below uses the same table, where U means 2007.

If the model family and year code do not match the available Maytag rules, Appliage does not assign a manufacture date.

Maytag Serial Numbers Appliage Cannot Find the Age

Samsung built the Maytag MAH8700 and MAH9700 front load washers. A federal recall notice lists the serial suffixes for 2005 and for January through July 2006, and no Maytag table decodes them.

The ten character format’s year letter table covers 1990 through 2013. In position 9, the letters B, D, F, and H identify 1990 through 1993 from inspector published tables, while Maytag’s own documents take over at K for 1994. A letter outside the supported set returns no date.

On the nine character layout, I, N, O, Q, V, or X in position 2 also returns no year, because no official document has dated those letters.

The year you decode is a build date. Whether a Maytag is still covered depends on when it was sold and on the warranty terms for that model.

Why Maytag Has Two Serial Number Formats

Whirlpool completed its purchase of Maytag on March 31, 2006, but Maytag did not switch every product to the new serial number format at once. The Maytag ending-letter year table continues through 2013, while a Centennial dryer from 2007 already uses the Whirlpool-style format. Choose the table from the serial number’s length and character positions, not from the acquisition date alone.

Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana are now part of Whirlpool’s appliance business, and many recent Maytag appliances use the same site-year-week layout explained in the Whirlpool serial number lookup. The tables on this page reach back to 1994; for anything older you would need a dated service document or another reliable date source.
